Catholic Church in Zambia Celebrates Historic Elevation of Ndola Diocese to Archdiocese, Calls for Political Reconciliation

On Saturday, August 31, 2024, the Catholic Church in Zambia marked a historic milestone with the elevation of the Ndola Diocese to an Archdiocese. The ceremony, held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, saw Bishop Benjamin Phiri installed as its first Archbishop. 

The event was graced by dignitaries including Zambia’s Vice President, Catholic Bishops from Zambia and Malawi, and numerous faithful.

Archbishop George Desmond Tambala of Malawi congratulated the Catholic Church in Zambia on this significant achievement, praising it as a symbol of growth and hope. He extended solidarity and prayers from the Catholic Church in Malawi.

Archbishop Ignatius Chama of Kasama expressed his gratitude to Pope Francis for establishing the new ecclesiastical province and appointing Archbishop Phiri as Metropolitan Archbishop. 

He highlighted the increased efficiency in the Church’s apostolic mission as a result of this development.

In his address, Archbishop Phiri emphasized the need for unity and reconciliation among politicians, urging them to put aside differences and work together for Zambia’s development. 

He criticized public squabbles that hinder progress and expressed a strong desire for political reconciliation to foster national growth.

Vice President and Acting President Mrs. W.K. Mutale Nalumango congratulated Archbishop Phiri on his appointment and acknowledged the significant responsibility entrusted to him. 

She commended his strategic vision and commitment to building on his predecessors’ foundations. Reflecting on leadership, Mrs. Nalumango drew parallels between leadership in the home and in the Church, stressing the importance of faithfulness and responsibility.

Addressing the call for reconciliation, Mrs. Nalumango affirmed the government’s desire to foster unity and collaboration. She invited the Church to mediate and guide the government in its efforts to promote love and unity across Zambia.
