DEC Seizes $280,000 in Counterfeit Currency and Apprehends Mozambican Drug Traffickers
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has achieved a significant breakthrough in its fight against financial and drug-related crimes. In two separate operations, DEC agents seized $280,000 in counterfeit U.S. currency and apprehended two Mozambican nationals involved in drug trafficking.
The counterfeit currency operation, executed with precision, led to the arrest of three individuals in Lusaka Province. Elias Tonga, 54, a self-proclaimed pastor from Mafuta Village in Chipata District; Peter Musongo Shamabanse, 47, from Kabwe District; and Wallace Kampango, 51, from Kapiri Mposhi District, were caught attempting to distribute fake $100 bills around Heroes Stadium.
The counterfeit notes pose a significant threat to Zambia’s financial stability and violate Section 358 of the Penal Code Act.
In a separate operation in Eastern Province, DEC agents apprehended two Mozambican nationals, Thocozane Azielo, 23, and Malekano Gureo, 27, for trafficking a substantial amount of illegal drugs.
The suspects were intercepted in Sindamisale, Vubwi District, with 20.2 kilograms of dry loose cannabis while traveling from Mozambique to Malawi on an unregistered motorbike.
The DEC’s proactive actions underscore its commitment to combating illegal activities and protecting public welfare. The suspects from both operations are now in custody and will face legal proceedings.
The DEC urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
The DEC’s efforts are a testament to its dedication to safeguarding Zambia from the threats posed by counterfeit currency and drug trafficking.
