Govt Invests Heavily in Cybersecurity to Combat Online Crimes and Scams

The Zambian government has announced significant investments in cybersecurity infrastructure to address online scams and harmful content, aiming to safeguard citizens from digital threats.

Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing digital security to protect citizens and children from online abuse. 

He expressed concerns over misinformation, defamation, online gender-based abuse, and scams, particularly on social media platforms like Facebook.

In a joint press briefing with Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Hon. Jacob Mwiimbu, held in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Mutati warned that perpetrators of online scams and abuse will face stringent consequences. 

He emphasized that online abuse poses both physical and mental risks to individuals.

Minister Mwiimbu added that individuals involved in spreading propaganda, hate speech, or committing online crimes could face up to five years in prison. 

He expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of false news and unverified content, which threatens national security and peace.

Both ministers urged Zambians to exercise responsibility online and adhere to legal standards. The government’s enhanced cybersecurity measures aim to curb the spread of false information and ensure a safer digital environment for all.
