Zone 4.5 Chess Tournament Draws Competitors from Five African Nations
The Zone 4.5 Chess Tournament, a premier chess event in Southern and Central Africa, is set to attract players from five participating countries. The tournament, announced by Chess Federation of Zambia President Commissioner Leslie Chikuse, includes categories for men, women, and juniors.
Co-hosted by Project Chess Zambia and the Chess Federation of Zambia, the tournament will not only crown the Zone 4.5 champions but also serve as a qualifier for the African Championship.
The event is seen as a key preparatory stage for the Chess Olympiad, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, on September 11, 2024.
The Chess Federation is sending a delegation of approximately 12 players to the Olympiad, one of the largest chess events globally. The Zone 4.5 Tournament’s winners will secure spots in the World Cup.
Chikuse expressed gratitude for the crucial support from various sponsors and acknowledged the Ministry of Sport for organizing a National Youth event on October 26th and 27th.
The Federation plans a nationwide talent identification program involving over 15 federations to enhance preparation for future events.
Additionally, the Zanga Process Championship will take place on August 24th. Chikuse called on corporate entities and national bodies to support these chess initiatives, emphasizing their importance for the growth of the sport in the region.
