Proflight Zambia Supports Durban July to Boost Local Tourism and Economic Growth

Proflight Zambia has extended its support to one of the region’s largest tourism events, the Durban July horse race, in an effort to inspire similar events within Zambia. This initiative is expected to stimulate economic growth and cultural exchange by drawing lessons from the success of South Africa’s premier event.

The Durban July, renowned for its fusion of sport, fashion, and economic impact, attracted over 50,000 attendees, including participants from Zambia, southern Africa, and beyond.

Proflight Zambia, along with industry partners, joined the Durban July Mega Familiarisation Trip hosted by the City of Durban, which coincided with the Hollywoodbets Durban July event.

“Event tourism has grown to become a major draw for holidaymakers and festival-goers. The economic benefits from these activities are crucial for the development of local communities, and both governments and communities encourage such initiatives at national and community levels,” said an official from Proflight Zambia.

The aviation sector benefits significantly from event tourism and plays a critical role in its promotion. Proflight Zambia provides direct routes from Lusaka to Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg, facilitating travel for tourists and business travelers and fostering economic ties between Zambia and South Africa.

“The Durban July is more than just an event; it’s a catalyst for economic and cultural synergy. Post-COVID, we have seen a significant uptick in international attendees, with many from Zambia,” noted Sibusiso Gumbi, Interim CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority.

The Durban July significantly impacts the local economy, with over 60,000 bed spaces booked during the event and an estimated R2.7 billion injected into the local economy. The event contributes R6.6 billion to the city’s GDP and creates approximately 11,900 jobs.

EThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Planning Committee Chairperson, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, emphasized the importance of partnerships between Durban and other African cities. “The partnerships we build through events like the Durban July are crucial. They enable us to share our culture, boost our economy, and create a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

Zambia hosts several unique events that attract visitors from neighboring countries, such as the Lusaka Agriculture and Commercial Show, the Mutomboko ceremony of the Lunda and Luba people in Luapula Province, and the Lusaka July. These events, scheduled from July to September 2024, play a vital role in promoting trade, investment, and tourism in Zambia.

Bunny Bhoola, Chairperson of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) KZN, emphasized the importance of repeat visitors and long-term relationships in sustaining economic growth stimulated by tourism activities.

The success of the Durban July offers valuable insights for Zambia. By focusing on strategic partnerships and enhancing tourism infrastructure, Zambia can attract large-scale tourism and hospitality events, fostering economic growth and cultural exchanges.

Proflight Zambia’s support and direct flights to major South African cities further bolster these efforts, making travel convenient and affordable for tourists and business travelers alike.
