Zambian Breweries Joins CAIA to Combat Public Health Threat
The Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol (CAIA) has expanded its alliance with new members, including prominent entities like Zambian Breweries to tackle the pervasive issue of illicit alcohol.
This strategic move aims to mobilize a comprehensive social movement against the sale and consumption of unregulated, often dangerous illicit spirits.
The coalition, which also includes the Churches Association of Zambia (CHAZ), the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA), DGM Beverages, Champion Industries, and Tiemann Beverages, marks a significant step forward in safeguarding public health and enhancing regulatory oversight.
Illicit alcohol poses serious health risks due to its unregulated nature, often containing unknown and potentially harmful ingredients. Beyond health concerns, the illegal trade undermines government revenues and contributes to social instability.
Dr. Christopher Kalila, co-chairperson of CAIA, emphasized the importance of collective action: “Today, we unite with a shared commitment to combat the scourge of illicit alcohol that plagues our communities. By joining forces, we aim to protect the health and well-being of Zambian consumers, ensuring a safer and brighter future for all.”
Thais Cavinatto, Country Director of Zambian Breweries, expressed gratitude for the coalition’s acceptance:
“It is a privilege to stand alongside esteemed industry leaders and stakeholders who are deeply committed to tackling the serious issue of illicit alcohol. By leveraging our combined expertise and resources, we can effectively combat the menace of illicit alcohol and create a safer, healthier environment for all Zambians.”
The collaboration within CAIA will focus on implementing initiatives to curb the production and distribution of illicit alcohol, thereby safeguarding the economic and social well-being of communities nationwide.
