Congolese Businessman Deported from Zambia for Repeated Immigration Violations
The Department of Immigration in Ndola has deported a 45-year-old Congolese businessman, Freddy Chansa, for repeatedly returning to Zambia unlawfully, violating immigration laws with impunity. Chansa was deported on June 19, 2024, via the Kasumbalesa Border Control under a warrant signed by the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security.
Chansa first came to the attention of the Department of Immigration on October 3, 2016, when the Department of National Registration, Passport, and Citizenship referred his application for late registration as a Zambian citizen to Immigration Headquarters. His application was rejected due to his failure to prove his claim to Zambian citizenship.
Earlier, the Zambian Consulate in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had also rejected his application for a Travel Document for similar reasons. Following this, Chansa entered Zambia without a travel document on May 7, 2016, in an attempt to obtain a Green National Registration Card.
After thorough investigations, the Department established that Chansa was born and raised in Congo, with his parents also being Congolese. As a result, he was first removed from Zambia on April 28, 2017, via Kasumbalesa Border Control.
Despite this, Chansa unlawfully returned to Zambia on unknown dates and fraudulently acquired a Green National Registration Card, a Zambian passport, and a Voter’s Registration Card.
He was subsequently arrested and prosecuted for providing false information to a public officer during the acquisition of the NRC. On February 16, 2022, he was convicted and later removed from the country for the second time via Kasumbalesa Border Control after paying a court fine.
Chansa re-entered Zambia unlawfully yet again, presenting himself at the Ndola Regional Immigration Office on May 14, 2024, demanding to be cleared as a Zambian citizen. This led to his third removal from the country on May 27, 2024. Persisting in his attempts, Chansa returned unlawfully once more and visited the Ndola Regional Immigration Office with his lawyers, leading to his final deportation on June 19, 2024.
In related developments, the Department of Immigration apprehended 77 individuals of various nationalities for various immigration offenses between June 18 and 20, 2024.
During this period, the Department secured 36 convictions, removed 31 illegal immigrants from the country, and denied entry to six foreign nationals for failing to meet entry requirements.
