New Directives Issued to Enhance Efficiency in Zambia’s Public Service
Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, has unveiled a series of new directives aimed at streamlining operations within the public service sector.
These measures are designed to enhance efficiency and promote responsible behaviour among government officials.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Mr Kangwa announced that, as part of cost-cutting efforts and to foster a culture of austerity, all international travel by public service officials, including permanent secretaries, will now be undertaken in economy class rather than business class.
This move is expected to significantly reduce unnecessary expenditure and align with the government’s commitment to prudent financial management.
In a bid to ensure better management and utilisation of government assets, Mr Kangwa has directed that all government vehicles must be parked by 18:00 hours daily.
This measure aims to enhance the accountability and efficient use of government resources.
Emphasising the importance of national unity in public service recruitments and deployments, Mr Kangwa called for fairness and inclusivity.
He stressed that the recruitment process should reflect the country’s diversity, ensuring that all regions are fairly represented.
Additionally, Mr Kangwa has put an end to the practice of surrendering officers who err to the cabinet office.
He underscored that these directives are intended to improve governance, enhance accountability, and promote sustainable practices across the public service.
This initiative aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision for a more efficient and responsible government.
“These measures are crucial for fostering a more accountable and efficient public service,” said Mr Kangwa. “By cutting unnecessary costs and ensuring fair practices in recruitment, we are working towards a more sustainable and inclusive public sector.”
