Former Zambian First Lady and Associates Arrested on Allegations of Possessing Proceeds of Crime
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has taken decisive action against prominent figures, including Mrs. Esther Nyawa Tembo Lungu, the wife of former President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, as well as Ms. Chiyeso Lungu Katete and Mr. Charles Phiri.
The trio faces serious charges related to the possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.
According to Allan Tamba, the DEC’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Esther Lungu has been arrested for allegedly possessing real estate properties, including 15 white double-storey flats situated at Property No. CHONG_ 9334/1 to 4 in the State Lodge area of Chongwe District.
The estimated cost of construction of these properties amounts to a staggering ZMW 41,586,110.66. Mrs. Lungu has reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for how she acquired these assets.
Ms. Chiyeso Lungu Katete and Mr. Charles Phiri are also facing charges of possessing properties reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Mr. Phiri is alleged to have possessed a three-storey lodge called “The Crest Lodge” in Ibex Hill, Lusaka, while Ms. Chiyeso Lungu Katete is accused of possessing multiple flats and high-cost houses in State Lodge, Lusaka.
The estimated costs of construction for these properties are substantial, raising suspicions of illicit acquisition.
Meanwhile, Tasila Lungu, also implicated in the case, is reportedly on maternity leave. Her legal representatives have been instructed to ensure her presence at the DEC on Monday, June 3rd, 2024, to address the charges against her.
