Zambia and Djibouti Strengthen Bilateral Ties for Mutual Benefits
Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mrs. Rose Sakala, has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with the Government of Djibouti, aiming to broaden economic cooperation for the mutual prosperity of both nations.
During the presentation of her Letters of Credence to President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, Ambassador Rose Sakala conveyed President Hakainde Hichilema’s appreciation for Djibouti’s crucial role in fostering regional peace and security by facilitating safe cargo movement.
Noting Djibouti’s strategic position along major shipping lanes, Ambassador Sakala underscored its significance in promoting global trade and commerce.
In response, President Guelleh commended Zambia’s historical contributions to the anti-colonial and anti-apartheid struggles in the region.
He praised President Hakainde Hichilema’s efforts in upholding peace and stability within Zambia and acknowledged Zambia’s pivotal role within the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
President Guelleh also highlighted the monumental legacy of Zambia’s first President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, emphasizing his profound impact as a freedom fighter and pan-Africanist.
President Guelleh encouraged Ambassador Sakala to maintain regular visits to Djibouti in her diplomatic capacity. Additionally, he sought Zambia’s support for Djibouti’s candidacy for the position of African Union Commission Chairperson in the upcoming elections scheduled for February 2025.
Ambassador Sakala also held discussions with Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, conveying warm regards from her Zambian counterpart, Mulambo Haimbe.
Minister Youssouf commended Zambia for its pivotal role in regional peace and security, given its status as the headquarters of COMESA.
He emphasized the importance of overcoming geographical distances to foster cooperation and expressed Djibouti’s readiness to collaborate with Zambia, leveraging each country’s unique strengths for mutual benefit.
