EU Funds Project to Empower Zambians on Environmental Rights
The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) has launched a new project aimed at strengthening environmental rights in Zambia. The “Strengthening the Respect for Environmental Rights in Zambia (SR4ER)” project is funded by the European Union and implemented jointly by CEJ, Hivos, and the Zambia Institute for Environmental Management (ZIEM).
The 3-year initiative will focus on empowering civil society and rights holders through training and capacity building. Participants will learn about their environmental rights, relevant legislation, and reporting mechanisms for environmental violations.
“The training sessions are crucial for enabling rights holders to contribute to the preservation and enforcement of environmental rights within their communities,” said CEJ Executive Director Maggie Mwape.
The project will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to identify environmental issues, report them effectively, and hold duty bearers accountable. They will also learn advocacy tactics to push for policy changes and environmental protection.
“Collectively, we can forge a future for Zambia where environmental rights are respected for our generation and those to come,” said Ms. Mwape. “Your empowerment is pivotal in ensuring accountability and instigating meaningful change.”
