Ministry of Education Presses Forward with Curriculum Reforms
The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to advancing curriculum reforms aimed at aligning Zambia’s education system with global standards. Dr. Charles Ndakala, Director of the Curriculum Development Centre, affirmed that the reform process is well underway, with significant milestones achieved.
Dr. Ndakala informed the media that after meticulous deliberations, the Ministry finalized the Zambia Education Curriculum Framework in December 2023. This comprehensive document underwent rigorous scrutiny and was subsequently submitted to the Cabinet office for further review and approval.
Key among the proposed reforms is a structural adjustment shifting from the traditional “Grades” to “Forms” within the education system. Additionally, learners are slated to undertake their school certificate examinations at the culmination of Form Four, a departure from previous practices.
In a bid to enhance financial management within schools, the Ministry revealed plans to recruit accountants, procurement officers, and auditors. This strategic move aims to bolster transparency and efficiency in handling grants allocated to educational institutions.
Addressing inquiries from the media during a press briefing convened by the Minister of Education, Hon. Douglas Syakalima, Ministry officials emphasized the significance of the ongoing teacher recruitment process.
Mr. Kasonde Mwila, Director of Human Resources, underscored the importance of induction programs for newly recruited teachers, noting that most have already commenced their duties.
Moreover, Mr. Mwila disclosed that transfers for newly recruited teachers will only be considered after a minimum tenure of four years at their initial posting, ensuring stability and continuity within school communities.
The press briefing also saw Hon. Douglas Syakalima announce President Hakainde Hichilema’s acceptance to serve as the Champion of Foundational Learning (FL) in Africa. This esteemed role underscores Zambia’s commitment to promoting quality education across the continent.
