Zambia Secures Foothold in China’s $2 Trillion Jiangsu Economy to Drive $2 Billion in New Investment

The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has secured a significant strategic partnership with the Jiangsu Industrial Cooperation Association, a network of over 5,000 enterprises, aimed at boosting investment inflows from the People’s Republic of China into Zambia.

The partnership was formalised in Nanjing, in China’s Jiangsu Province, and is expected to strengthen Zambia’s visibility in one of the country’s most economically powerful regions, with a GDP exceeding USD 2 trillion.

As part of the agreement, the Association has offered ZDA complimentary office space to establish a representative office in Nanjing, as well as administrative support for staffing, at no cost to the Zambian Government or ZDA.

ZDA Director-General Albert Halwampa described the development as a transformative milestone in Zambia’s investment promotion strategy, saying it will enhance investor engagement and improve information flow between the two countries.

He said the initiative aligns with Zambia’s broader economic agenda to attract investment into priority sectors such as mining, energy, manufacturing, and value addition.

“Establishing ZDA’s presence in Jiangsu Province is a strategic milestone that will enhance investor engagement and position Zambia to attract high-quality investments,” Mr Halwampa said, adding that Zambia is targeting at least 10 per cent of Jiangsu’s GDP in investment inflows, equivalent to about USD 2 billion.

He further credited the development to strong leadership under Hakainde Hichilema, noting that stable macroeconomic conditions and investor-friendly policies have strengthened confidence in Zambia’s economy.

Zambian Ambassador to China, Ivan Zyuulu, welcomed the partnership, describing it as a positive gesture that will further deepen economic cooperation between Zambia and China.

Meanwhile, Jiangsu Industrial Cooperation Association Director Chen Weimin said the initiative responds to growing interest among Chinese investors seeking opportunities in Zambia, particularly across key productive sectors.

The ZDA and the Zambian Embassy in Beijing are currently on a joint investment promotion roadshow in China aimed at positioning Zambia as a leading investment destination in Africa.
