Motorists to Begin Paying Using Mobile Money at Toll Gates

The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has introduced mobile money payment options at toll gates across the country, in a move aimed at enhancing convenience and improving efficiency for motorists.

Speaking in a statement issued on 12 April 2026, NRFA Public Relations Manager, Alphonsius Hamachila, said the new system will operate alongside existing payment methods, including the E-Toll Card and cash payments.

Mr Hamachila noted that the introduction of mobile money provides motorists with three accessible payment options, which are expected to ease congestion at toll gates, improve traffic flow and enhance the overall customer experience.

He, however, clarified that the mobile money payment option will not be available at toll gates operated under Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.

Meanwhile, NRFA Information Communication Technology (ICT) Manager, Mumba Mubili, said the initiative forms part of the Agency’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Mr Mubili explained that the adoption of mobile money is intended to make toll payments more efficient and user-friendly, while strengthening revenue collection to support the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of the national road network.

He added that the NRFA remains committed to leveraging technology to modernise toll operations and improve service delivery.

Some motorists have welcomed the development, describing the mobile money payment process as simple, secure and fast. They noted that toll collectors only require a motorist’s mobile phone number, after which a prompt is sent to approve the transaction on their device.
