Data and AI Expert Oliver Chinganya Elected President of International Statistical Institute
Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, has congratulated Oliver Chinganya, Board Chairperson of the Zambia Statistics Agency, on his election as President of the International Statistical Institute for the 2029–2031 term.
Dr Musokotwane described the development as a proud moment not only for Zambia but for the African continent, noting that Dr Chinganya’s election marks the first time an African will lead the Institute.
He said the achievement reflects growing global recognition of African expertise, competence and leadership in the field of statistics.
The Minister highlighted Dr Chinganya’s distinguished career, pointing to his previous role as Chief Statistician at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
He currently serves as Board Chairperson of ZamStats and as Senior Advisor for Data and Artificial Intelligence at the International Growth Centre based at the London School of Economics.
Dr Musokotwane said the election represents a vote of confidence in a Zambian professional whose integrity and service have earned international respect.
He added that the milestone demonstrates Zambia’s growing contribution to shaping global thinking, particularly in the area of data and statistics.
He further emphasised the importance of credible statistics in national development, stating that reliable data enables government to plan effectively, allocate resources efficiently, attract investment and assess whether development outcomes are benefiting citizens.
The Minister also extended congratulations to other officials and council members elected from several countries, including Canada, the United States, Chile, Italy, Brazil, Portugal, Taiwan, India and China, noting that their selection reflects the Institute’s global and collaborative nature.
He expressed confidence that Dr Chinganya will serve with distinction in his new role and continue to bring honour to Zambia, Africa and the global statistical community.
