SADC, Japan Seal Strategic Cooperation Deal to Enhance Regional Development and Trade

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the Japan, marking a significant step in strengthening ties and advancing shared development priorities.

The agreement was signed in Gaborone by SADC Executive Secretary Elias M. Magosi and Japan’s Ambassador to Botswana and Permanent Representative to SADC, Shindo Yusuke.

The MoC follows approval by the SADC Council of Ministers during its meeting held in Pretoria in March 2026.

The agreement is designed to enhance collaboration across key sectors aligned with the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020–2030 and Vision 2050. Priority areas include infrastructure development, particularly in energy, transport, water, and digital transformation, as well as trade, investment, tourism, and private sector growth.

Additional areas of focus include manufacturing and value chain development, agriculture, rural development, mining, education, health, skills development, and environmental sustainability. The partnership will also support peace, security, governance, and regional stability.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr Magosi said the agreement reflects a partnership that is becoming more responsive to the needs and aspirations of citizens across both regions. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that the cooperation delivers tangible and impactful results.

Ambassador Yusuke noted that the MoC provides a framework for aligning priorities between SADC and Japan, particularly in enhancing transport corridors and improving logistics systems to facilitate seamless trade and deeper regional integration.

He also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in sustainable energy, including the promotion of renewable technologies to build a more resilient energy sector.

Furthermore, he highlighted the role of industrialisation and value addition in unlocking opportunities for agro-processing and private sector development.

The ambassador added that fostering innovation and creating an enabling business environment will be key to driving sustainable job creation, particularly for young people in the region.

The latest agreement builds on an earlier Memorandum of Cooperation signed between SADC and Japan in April 2012, which established a framework for advancing mutual development objectives and strengthening bilateral relations.
