School Feeding Programme Supports Better Learning and Attendance

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the education system through the expansion of the School Feeding Programme, a key initiative aimed at enhancing learner welfare and academic performance.

Speaking during the launch and monitoring of the Provincial School Feeding Programme at Chiwempala Combined School in Chingola District, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga said the programme is designed to nurture responsible citizens who will contribute to Zambia’s economic development.

Since its introduction in 2021, the programme has expanded significantly, with more than 5.1 million learners benefiting across 116 districts. In 2026, Government has allocated K443 million to support the initiative, which now covers over 8,000 schools nationwide.

Chiwempala Combined School, which has more than 4,000 learners, is among the beneficiaries. The school has also received new infrastructure, including classroom blocks, administration facilities, and laboratories, aimed at improving the learning environment.

District Education Board Secretary Noah Simulunga noted that the programme is improving learner concentration and performance by addressing hunger and nutritional needs.

School Head Teacher Jonathan Nkandu said the institution has recorded notable growth due to the combined impact of free education and the feeding programme.

Chingola District Commissioner Howard Kamwandi highlighted that the initiative is also stimulating local economic activity by sourcing food from local suppliers, thereby benefiting surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, Chingola Mayor Johnson Kang’ombe called for collective efforts to ensure that the benefits of free education reach all learners, enabling every child to thrive.

Learners have also welcomed the programme, with the school head boy noting improved attendance, better concentration, and increased enthusiasm for learning as key outcomes.

The School Feeding Programme continues to play a critical role in supporting education outcomes while contributing to broader social and economic development across Zambia.
