ZESCO Invests K350,000 to Upgrade Sanitation and Learning at Imwiko Primary School

ZESCO has invested K350,000 in infrastructure and educational support at Imwiko Primary School, in a move aimed at improving learning conditions and promoting hygiene among pupils.

The initiative, unveiled on 25 March 2026, forms part of the corporation’s Corporate Social Investment programme and builds on last year’s donation of over 400 textbooks to the school.

This year’s intervention focused on upgrading sanitation facilities, including the conversion of 20 pit latrines into modern flushable toilets, with separate structures for boys and girls. The project also included the installation of fully functional sanitation cubicles to enhance hygiene standards at the school.

In addition to infrastructure development, ZESCO donated uniforms for the Girls and Boys Brigade, branded attire, stationery and essential hygiene materials such as reusable sanitary pads and sewing kits.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on behalf of Managing Director Justin Loongo, Director Audit and Risk Wabei Mangambwa said the initiative reflects the corporation’s commitment to sustainable community development.

“By investing in schools, healthcare facilities and hygiene programmes, we aim to create long-term positive impacts that empower children, families and communities,” she said.

Western Province Minister Kapelwa Astley Mbangweta commended the initiative, noting its contribution to improving education standards in the region.

“This government continues to prioritise quality education and community development. Partnerships such as these directly improve learning environments and promote well-being,” he said.

District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) for Mongu Sibeso Silumesi also welcomed the development, emphasising the importance of hygiene in effective learning.

“Clean, safe and well-equipped environments are essential for learners to reach their full potential. This intervention is both timely and impactful,” she said.

The project is expected to benefit more than 2,000 pupils by providing a safer, healthier and more conducive learning environment, while reinforcing ZESCO’s broader commitment to supporting education and community development across Zambia.
