Zambia to Host Historic Global Climate Fund Meeting in Livingstone

Zambia is set to host the Eighth Board Meeting of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing role in global climate governance.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, Douty Chibamba, announced the development during a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday on behalf of Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Elton Mposha.

Dr Chibamba described the event as historic, noting that Zambia will become the first African country to host a Board meeting of the Fund.

The high-level meeting is scheduled to take place from 22 to 24 April 2026 at the Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya Livingstone Resort in Livingstone, and is expected to attract global delegates and climate experts.

Highlighting the significance of the event, Dr Chibamba said Zambia’s selection reflects growing international confidence in the country’s ability to host major global engagements and contribute meaningfully to climate action.

He explained that the Fund, established in 2022 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is designed to support developing countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Dr Chibamba noted that Zambia stands to benefit from the initiative, particularly as it continues to face climate-related challenges such as droughts, floods and extreme weather conditions that have adversely affected livelihoods, food security and the national economy.

He further disclosed that Zambia is preparing to submit a project proposal to access up to 20 million US dollars under the fund’s current financing window, with support from cooperating partners.

Dr Chibamba expressed gratitude to key partners, including the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and GIZ, for their continued support in climate-related initiatives and for sponsoring aspects of the media briefing.

He added that the Government has constituted a multi-sectoral local organising committee to coordinate preparations and ensure the successful hosting of the meeting.

Emphasising the broader impact, Dr Chibamba said the event presents an opportunity for Zambia to showcase its leadership, hospitality and commitment to global climate action, while amplifying Africa’s call for accessible and adequate climate financing.

He has since called on stakeholders, including Government institutions, the private sector, civil society, academia and the media, to support preparations for the international event.

Dr Chibamba assured both local and international stakeholders that Zambia is fully prepared to host a successful and impactful meeting.

Zambia’s hosting of the Eighth Board Meeting is expected to draw global attention to the challenges faced by climate-vulnerable countries, while positioning the nation to access critical financial resources for climate resilience.
