Zambia Calls for Stronger Regional Cooperation on Migration Challenges

Zambia’s Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Mr. Jack Mwiimbu, has called for enhanced regional cooperation to address growing migration and refugee challenges, as the country continues to experience an influx of migrants and displaced persons.

Mr. Mwiimbu made the remarks during a courtesy call on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, while attending a meeting convened by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on comprehensive solutions for Burundian refugees.

He stressed the urgent need for coordinated efforts among countries along key migration routes, noting that sustained regional dialogue is essential in developing durable solutions to displacement and irregular migration.

The Minister highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between Zambia and Kenya in areas of security, migration management, and information sharing. He added that closer cooperation would not only address migration challenges but also enhance stability across the region.

Mr. Mwiimbu further emphasised the need to deepen economic ties among African countries, stating that increased intra-African trade and investment are critical to building economic resilience and driving sustainable growth.

He encouraged stronger bilateral engagement between Zambia and Kenya to promote tourism, improve service delivery, and attract investment.

Mr. Mwiimbu also commended Kenya for its progress across various sectors, expressing Zambia’s interest in learning from the country’s best practices to support its own development agenda.

The Minister was accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Mr. Mubita Luwabelwa, and other senior government officials.

Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Mr. Alfred Musemuna, welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the strong and longstanding bilateral relations between Zambia and Kenya.
