Fugu and Kente Exhibition Strengthens Zambia–Ghana Cultural Ties
Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Rodney Sikumba, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening cultural and tourism cooperation with Ghana during the Fugu and Kente Solo Exhibition held at the Lusaka Showgrounds.
Speaking at the event, Mr Sikumba described the exhibition as an important platform for celebrating African heritage and deepening cultural ties between Zambia and Ghana.
He noted that Fugu and Kente, two of Ghana’s most iconic traditional textiles, represent more than fashion, but embody the history, identity and craftsmanship of the Ghanaian people.
The minister said cultural expressions such as textiles play a vital role in promoting cultural tourism and strengthening people-to-people connections across the African continent.
He added that Zambia also values its own rich cultural heritage, highlighting traditional fabrics such as Chitenge and Musisi as symbols of identity, tradition and social expression.
Mr Sikumba further emphasised that cultural exhibitions can help position Africa’s creative industries as key drivers of tourism growth, economic development and global cultural recognition.
He also reiterated the Zambian Government’s commitment, under President Hakainde Hichilema, to deepening bilateral cooperation with Ghana in tourism, culture and the creative industries.
“Tourism today goes beyond landscapes and wildlife. It is increasingly driven by authentic cultural experiences including fashion, art, music, cuisine and heritage,” he said.
The minister added that initiatives such as the exhibition create opportunities for collaboration between Zambian and Ghanaian designers, artisans and entrepreneurs, while promoting Africa’s creative economy on the global stage.
The Fugu and Kente Exhibition, running from 6 to 8 March 2026 at the Lusaka Showgrounds, has attracted designers, cultural enthusiasts and members of the diplomatic community interested in celebrating African creativity and strengthening cultural exchange between the two nations.
