Husqvarna Encourages Regular Maintenance of Power Tools
Users of outdoor power equipment have been encouraged to prioritise regular servicing to ensure safety, efficiency and longer tool life.
According to Husqvarna, consistent maintenance of power tools such as chainsaws, brushcutters, pole saws, tillers and battery sprayers is essential for reliable performance and operator safety.
Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager for Distributors Africa at Husqvarna South Africa, said many users overlook servicing until equipment begins to malfunction.
“Servicing is often overlooked until something goes wrong. Maintenance is not only about keeping tools running but also about keeping users safe,” Barthorpe said.
He noted that poorly maintained equipment can pose safety risks, adding that issues such as neglected chains or loose harnesses could turn routine work into hazardous situations.
Barthorpe advised users to adopt a simple maintenance routine to ensure their equipment remains in good condition, especially when tools are used regularly.
Before every use, operators are encouraged to check fuel, oil and battery levels, and remove debris from cooling fins, filters and air intakes to prevent overheating. Safety components such as chain brakes, guards and switches should also be inspected to ensure they are functioning properly.
Weekly checks should include examining starter cords and mechanisms, cleaning spark plugs on petrol-powered models and checking air filters for dust accumulation. Users are also advised to inspect vibration-damping components for signs of wear that could affect tool handling.
Monthly maintenance may involve sharpening cutting components such as chains and blades or replacing trimmer lines. Drive belts and sprockets should also be checked for wear, while mufflers or spark arrestors should be cleaned to prevent carbon build-up in petrol-powered equipment.
Barthorpe further recommended annual or seasonal servicing, particularly before storing equipment for extended periods. This includes draining fuel tanks, replacing spark plugs, oil and filters and storing batteries in a cool, dry place after recharging.
He said many routine maintenance tasks can be carried out at home using model-specific service kits and manuals provided by Husqvarna. These kits include genuine parts and step-by-step instructions tailored to individual tools.
However, for more complex diagnostics, safety-critical repairs or seasonal servicing, Barthorpe encouraged users to seek assistance from authorised dealers.
“DIY maintenance is a great way to become familiar with your tools, but trained technicians are able to detect potential issues that may not be visible to the average user,” he said.
Authorised service centres also use genuine parts and accessories, including the brand’s X-Cut saw chain, designed for improved sharpness, durability and reduced stretching.
For battery-powered equipment, dealers can also carry out software updates and battery diagnostics to ensure consistent performance.
Barthorpe emphasised that well-maintained equipment not only performs better but also lasts longer.
“The best-performing tools are not only well built, they are also well looked after. By doing a few simple checks and maintaining regular care, users can avoid breakdowns, stay safe and extend the life of their equipment,” he said.
