New Huambo Stadium Strengthens Angola’s Capacity to Host Major Tournaments

The Government of Angola has inaugurated the Huambo Stadium Daniel Cassoma Lutucuta, a 10,000-seat, multi-purpose sports facility built to FIFA, UEFA and World Athletics (IAAF) standards.

The opening marks the third internationally certified arena delivered in five months, following the Uíge and Bengo stadiums, highlighting Angola’s rapid expansion of world-class sports infrastructure.

The inauguration was led by Rui Falcão Pinto de Andrade, Minister of Youth and Sports, and attended by senior officials including Sílvia Lutucuta, Minister of Health, and Pereira Alfredo, Governor of Huambo Province. The ceremony also featured representatives from Mitrelli, the company responsible for delivering the stadium.

“This is not just a stadium. It is an affirmation of Angola’s capacity. It is proof that our country has technical competence, strategic vision, and ambition to build world-class infrastructure,” said Minister Rui Falcão Pinto de Andrade during the inauguration.

The stadium, named in honour of Daniel Cassoma Lutucuta, a revered Angolan football figure, is designed to inspire future generations through its emphasis on technical excellence, leadership and community values.

“Behind every inclusive sports facility are thousands of future stories – athletes, families, entrepreneurs, entire communities,” said Rodrigo Manso. “Delivering three internationally compliant arenas in five months reflects a clear national priority: investing in youth and advancing Angola’s presence on the global stage.”

The Huambo complex features an international-size pitch, athletics track, dedicated athlete and referee facilities, anti-doping infrastructure, and broadcast-ready media zones aligned with UEFA Category IV standards.

Its rapid completion demonstrates Angola’s commitment to meeting CAF infrastructure requirements for competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), while reinforcing the country’s role in Africa’s growing sports economy.

The opening of the Huambo Stadium is part of Angola’s broader strategy to empower youth, attract continental competitions, and elevate the nation’s global sporting footprint.
