Zambia Invests in Red Locust Control to Protect Farmers and Harvests

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mr John Mulongoti, is on a working visit to Copperbelt Province to enhance coordination and monitor key agricultural programmes.

During his visit to Ndola, Mr Mulongoti paid a courtesy call on the Provincial Agricultural Coordinator’s Office (PACO), engaging with technical staff and receiving updates on ongoing agricultural activities.

He later met with Copperbelt Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mr Daniel Kamengo, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to close collaboration between headquarters and provincial administration in implementing government priorities.

A key highlight of the visit was inspecting progress on the construction of the International Red Locust Control Organisation for Central and Southern Africa, headquartered in Ndola.

The organisation plays a crucial role in monitoring, forecasting, and controlling red locust outbreaks across the region. For decades, it has partnered with Zambia in combating locust invasions that threaten crops, pasture, and national food security.

Mr Mulongoti emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening early warning systems and rapid response mechanisms to protect farmers from pest outbreaks.

He noted that the enhanced infrastructure at the Red Locust Organisation will improve research capacity, coordination, and position Zambia as a regional hub for locust surveillance and control.

“Proactive pest management is vital for safeguarding agricultural productivity,” Mr Mulongoti said. “As Zambia continues to prioritise food security, climate resilience, and increased agricultural output, strengthening institutions like the Red Locust Organisation is critical to protecting farmers and livelihoods.”

The Ministry acknowledged the organisation’s pivotal role in supporting Zambia’s efforts to manage red locust infestations, which can cause significant crop losses if left unchecked.

The Permanent Secretary’s visit will continue with site inspections and engagements with technical teams to ensure projects are progressing as planned and delivering value to farmers.
