Kazungula Bridge: A Regional and Global Asset, Says President Hichilema

Zambia and Botswana have officially commissioned the Kazungula Bridge, linking the two countries across the Zambezi River. President Hakainde Hichilema described the bridge as not only a national asset but a regional and global one during the launch of the Kazungula Bridge Authority in Kasane, Botswana.

President Hichilema stressed the need for African nations to take ownership of their development agenda. “The Kazungula Bridge is a shared asset belonging not only to Zambia and Botswana but to the region and the world. This bridge is not just for two countries, it is a regional and continental asset,” he said.

He thanked the Government and people of Botswana for hosting the launch and the local communities of Kazungula and Kasane for safeguarding the bridge and surrounding crossing points over the years. He highlighted the bridge’s role in restoring economic unity and fostering regional cooperation.

The Kazungula Bridge, opened in May 2021, has become a key gateway for trade along Southern Africa’s North-South Corridor. Since its opening, the average number of trucks crossing daily has risen from 214 in 2021 to 491 by December 2025, reflecting the bridge’s contribution to regional trade and revenue generation.

President of Botswana, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, described the bridge as an “iconic symbol of regional connection, cooperation, and trade.” He urged African leaders to harness the continent’s resources and talent to develop an economy where goods and services create value.

“The bridge represents the kind of regional integration needed to unlock Africa’s potential. Truck queues at the border have already been reduced significantly, with plans to move towards a 24-hour operation and eventually a non-stop border post,” he said.

Hon. Eng. Charles Lubasi Milupi, Zambia’s Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, explained that the Kazungula Bridge Authority was established under a bilateral agreement to manage and oversee the bridge’s operations.

He said the Authority would enhance operational efficiency and foster long-term growth, moving from a one-stop to a non-stop border post through the use of technology.

“The Kazungula Bridge is a masterpiece of infrastructure and stands as Africa’s newest super-bridge. It is a benchmark for the region and the continent,” Hon. Eng. Milupi said.

He pledged that the Authority would serve as a model for efficient management, benefiting Zambia, Botswana, the region, and Africa for generations to come.
