UNZA Students Exposed to Modern Irrigation Solutions Through JICA-Led Lecture
Students at the University of Zambia (UNZA) have been equipped with practical knowledge on modern irrigation technologies following a comprehensive lecture delivered by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the World Bank.
The lecture, held at UNZA’s main campus, focused on preparing future agricultural professionals with skills in irrigation systems, sustainable water management and innovative farming practices needed to address Zambia’s growing agricultural and climate-related challenges.
JICA representatives emphasised the role of efficient irrigation in increasing crop yields, strengthening food security and improving climate resilience. The session highlighted advanced irrigation methods such as drip and sprinkler systems, alongside water conservation practices designed for both smallholder and commercial farmers.
Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture stressed that irrigation remains a key pillar of Zambia’s national agricultural strategy, particularly as climate change continues to cause erratic rainfall patterns and prolonged dry spells. They urged students to adopt modern irrigation technologies as a means of modernising agriculture and boosting national food production.
The World Bank underscored the need for sustained investment in irrigation infrastructure and capacity building, noting that strong partnerships between development agencies, government bodies and academic institutions are essential in nurturing skilled agricultural professionals.
Students actively engaged during the session, raising questions on practical implementation, access to financing and how smallholder farmers can benefit from modern irrigation solutions. The lecture also featured case studies showcasing successful irrigation projects implemented in Zambia and other parts of the region.
Speaking after the session, a student said the lecture had broadened their understanding of the transformative role technology can play in agriculture. “This has opened my eyes to the potential of modern irrigation in transforming agriculture in Zambia,” the student said.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by JICA, the Ministry of Agriculture and the World Bank to strengthen agricultural education, promote sustainable farming practices and equip future professionals with the tools needed to respond effectively to Zambia’s agricultural and climate challenges.
