Zambia’s Speaker to Participate in UN–IPU Parliamentary Hearing in New York

Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Dr Nelly B. K. Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, has arrived in New York to take part in the 2026 Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations, jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations.

Zambia’s participation in the high-level forum reaffirms the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, democratic governance and parliamentary diplomacy, particularly in advancing peace, sustainable development and inclusive global solutions.

The Parliamentary Hearing, scheduled for 12–13 February 2026, is being held under the theme “Parliaments and the United Nations: Better together, delivering for the people”. The event coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, providing a timely opportunity for parliamentarians to assess how closer collaboration between national legislatures and the UN can deliver tangible benefits for citizens worldwide.

Discussions will be guided by the Pact for the Future, a key framework aimed at renewing and strengthening multilateralism with the United Nations at its core. The forum will advance Action 55 of the Pact, which calls for deeper engagement between the UN and national parliaments, while also supporting the General Assembly resolution on cooperation among the UN, parliaments and the IPU.

Outcomes from the Hearing are expected to contribute to the wider UN80 reform agenda, focused on improving effectiveness, accountability and impact across the UN system.

During the sessions, Dr Mutti is expected to contribute to high-level discussions on topics including renewing trust in multilateral cooperation, translating global commitments into national action, safeguarding democracy amid rising challenges, and financing and future-proofing the United Nations.

On the margins of the event, the Speaker will also hold bilateral engagements with counterparts and international partners.

Dr Mutti is accompanied by Hon. Mubita Anakoka, MP for Luena Constituency, Acting Clerk of the National Assembly Mrs Loveness Mayaka, and other officials from the National Assembly of Zambia.
