Vice President Opens 2026 Zambia–China Spring Festival Temple Fair in Lusaka

Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Her Honour Mutale V.K. Nalumango, has officially opened the 2026 Zambia–China Spring Festival Temple Fair, reaffirming the strong and enduring friendship between Zambia and the People’s Republic of China.

The colourful ceremony was held at Levy Junction Mall in Lusaka and attracted senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the business community and members of the public. The festival aims to strengthen people-to-people exchanges while promoting trade, investment and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

In her keynote address, the Vice President highlighted China’s continued support for Zambia’s economic transformation through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). 

aaShe reiterated the Government’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in value addition and beneficiation of natural resources, in line with Zambia’s industrialisation and job creation agenda.

Her Honour Nalumango also encouraged Chinese investors to take advantage of Zambia’s favourable investment climate, noting that increased investment flows would promote inclusive growth, mutual benefit and shared prosperity.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism Honourable Rodney Sikumba said the Spring Festival Temple Fair demonstrates the transformative power of culture in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting cultural tourism. 

He noted that cultural festivals convert heritage into shared experiences that stimulate tourism growth, foster social cohesion and create sustainable economic opportunities.

Honourable Sikumba emphasised that cultural tourism goes beyond commerce, describing it as a vital tool for preserving national identity, inspiring pride and supporting long-term development. He called for sustained collaboration between Zambia and China through cultural exchange and community engagement.

Speaking at the event, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, Mr Wang Sheng, said the Spring Festival Temple Fair reflects the deep-rooted friendship and expanding cooperation between the two nations.

“The Spring Festival Temple Fair symbolises the strong bond between our two countries. It promotes mutual understanding, cultural appreciation and people-to-people friendship, which form the foundation of China–Zambia relations,” Mr Wang said.

Held under the framework of the 2026 Year of People-to-People Exchanges between China and Africa, the festival was organised in partnership with the Chinese Embassy in Zambia. It featured vibrant cultural performances, exhibitions and interactive displays showcasing the traditions, cuisine and artistic heritage of both Zambia and China.
