Zambia Warns of Conflict Over Shared Water Resources

The Government of Zambia has warned that shared water resources could become sources of conflict if not effectively managed, calling for stronger international cooperation to promote peace and sustainable development.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Eng. Romas Kamanga, made the remarks during a meeting with United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Deputy Executive Secretary, Mr Dmitry Mariyasin, on the margins of the High-Level Preparatory Meeting for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference in Dakar.

Eng. Kamanga stressed that effective cooperation over shared watercourses is critical to preventing disputes and fostering regional stability.

He reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening transboundary water cooperation with neighbouring countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and other states sharing river systems with Zambia.

The Permanent Secretary also expressed gratitude to the UN Water Convention team for supporting Zambia as it prepares to co-chair the Interactive Dialogue on Water Cooperation alongside Finland at the 2026 UN Water Conference, scheduled for Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Mr Mariyasin commended Zambia for its leadership in advancing international water cooperation within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and reaffirmed UNECE’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s efforts.

He further emphasised the importance of meaningful partnerships in promoting peace and sustainable development through shared water governance.
