SADC Emergency Team Integrated into Mozambique’s Flood Response Efforts
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been formally integrated into Mozambique’s national humanitarian coordination mechanism following severe flooding that has affected several parts of the country.
The team arrived in Xai-Xai on 24 January and was received by the President of Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), Her Excellency Ms Luísa Celma Meque, who is providing overall technical leadership for the Government’s humanitarian response.
The deployment follows Mozambique’s declaration of a Red Alert on 16 January 2026 and an appeal for international humanitarian assistance. Ms Meque welcomed the SADC team and briefed them on the evolving flood situation, expressing appreciation for the regional body’s swift and timely support, which she said is critical to strengthening national coordination and relief efforts.
The SADC humanitarian mission in Mozambique is led by Brigadier General Chere Makhetha, SADC Chief of Staff, who is providing overall technical oversight and acting as the principal liaison with the Mozambican authorities. The Emergency Response Team includes specialists in safety and security, logistics, search and rescue, information management, public health emergency response, civil–military coordination, communications and multi-sectoral assessments.
Flooding has caused extensive damage across several provinces, particularly in Gaza Province, where large areas remain submerged and inaccessible. Roads, public facilities and other critical infrastructure have been severely damaged, with floodwaters reaching areas previously considered safe.
Nationally, more than 651,800 people have been affected by the floods, with 12 deaths reported. Over 71,600 houses have been flooded, while 364 schools and 229 health facilities have been impacted. Gaza Province remains the hardest hit, followed by Maputo Province, Maputo City and Sofala Province.
Upon arrival, the SADC team was briefed on the operations of the national coordination centre to ensure full integration into the response structure and effective contribution to ongoing emergency response, relief and early recovery efforts.
Humanitarian partners continue to work around the clock to rescue affected populations and deliver life-saving assistance to communities impacted by the floods.
