KCM and Green Initiative Zambia Plant Thousands of Trees
KCM pledges 100,000 trees annually across Copperbelt districts
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability through a strategic partnership with Green Initiative Zambia, a local NGO renowned for its environmental advocacy and conservation projects.
Speaking on the initiative, KCM CSR Manager Mr Brian Siatubi said the company has long prioritised environmental protection, positioning itself as a key contributor to sustainable development across the Copperbelt and beyond.
As part of this partnership, KCM has rolled out an extensive tree-planting programme, targeting 100,000 trees annually in each district where it operates. During the current season, from 15 December 2025 to 15 January 2026, 85,000 trees have already been planted across operational units in collaboration with schools, community cooperatives, and local residents.
The initiative, supported with a USD 108,000 investment under KCM’s CSR framework, includes tree nursery activities at Chingola Secondary School, with additional nurseries planned for Chililabombwe, Kitwe, and Shibuyunji. These nurseries empower learners to raise seedlings, actively participating in environmental stewardship while promoting long-term sustainability. Essential tools such as wheelbarrows, rakes, seeds, pots, watering cans, and gumboots have been provided to ensure effective implementation.
Green Initiative Zambia CEO Mr Kunda confirmed that tree-planting activities are progressing steadily. “Planting has been completed in Chililabombwe, Kitwe, and most parts of Chingola, with Shibuyunji yet to commence. The programme directly benefits communities, increases green cover, restores ecological balance, and creates long-term economic opportunities through future timber harvesting,” he said.
The project has already benefited more than 100 community members across four cooperatives, strengthening KCM’s CSR footprint and demonstrating a sustained commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
