DRC-Zambia Joint Defence Commission Closes with Renewed Commitment to Border Security
The 14th Session of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has concluded in Lubumbashi, with both countries pledging to strengthen collaboration in combating crime along their shared border.
Leading the Zambian delegation, Minister of Defence Hon Ambrose Lwiji Lufuma MP, emphasised the importance of regional stability to boost trade between Zambia and the DRC.
He highlighted that Zambia has begun exporting beef to the DRC, and that key infrastructure projects, including the Lobito Corridor and the Kolwezi–Solwezi road, are progressing well. “Zambia is committed to ensuring lasting peace and security in the region to allow economic projects to succeed,” Mr Lufuma said.
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Hon Jack Jacob Mwiimbu MP called for enhanced cooperation between both countries’ security services to curb crime. He stressed the need for joint patrols and operations along the common border to tackle criminal activities effectively.
On the DRC side, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralisation and Traditional Affairs Lukoo Bihango Jacquemain Shabani highlighted the shared responsibility in fighting banditry, terrorism and transnational organised crime.
He described the Joint Permanent Commission as a crucial platform for addressing security concerns and praised Presidents Felix Tshisekedi and Hakainde Hichilema for fostering bilateral cooperation.
Hon Shabani also acknowledged historical ties between Zambia and the DRC and urged both nations to strengthen their collaboration. He noted that the eastern region of the DRC is currently facing instability and appealed for regional support to tackle the ongoing insurgency.
The Zambian delegation included senior officials such as Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Mr Maambo Haamaundu, Acting Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Mr Goodson Sinyenga, Zambia National Service Commander Lt Gen Eng Maliti Solochi, Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Mr Frederick Chilukutu, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Ms Charity Munganga.
