Zambia Celebrates Record 241 Medals by Athletes in 2025

The Zambian Government has commended the nation’s athletes for a remarkable sporting year, following the winning of 241 medals at international and continental competitions throughout 2025.

Speaking at a medal presentation ceremony held at the National Sports Development Centre (NASDEC), Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, described the achievement as a defining moment in Zambia’s sporting history, highlighting the country’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.

“The 241 medals we celebrate today are not just symbols of victory, they represent perseverance, discipline and resilience. Our athletes have shown that with the right support, Zambians can compete and excel anywhere in the world,” Hon. Nkandu said.

The Minister paid tribute to athletes, coaches, managers, national sports federations and administrators for their collective role in nurturing talent and delivering results, noting that the success reflects strong coordination within the sports sector.

Hon. Nkandu further reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to investing in sport, following the directive of President Hakainde Hichilema to prioritise athlete welfare, infrastructure development, and sustainable sports systems.

“Sport remains a powerful vehicle for national development, unity, and international prestige. Our focus now is to institutionalise this success by improving facilities, investing in sports science and strengthening talent development pipelines,” the Minister stated.

He also announced that the Government is rolling out multi-sports facilities nationwide, including football pitches and multi-purpose courts, to support the next generation of athletes.

Hon. Nkandu observed that Zambia’s improved medal haul in recent years reflects a shift from mere participation to strong global competitiveness, with the nation outperforming some countries with larger populations and more advanced sports infrastructure.
