“Let’s Promote a 24-Hour Tourism Economy” – Sikumba
The Government has called for the promotion of a 24-hour economy in the tourism sector as Radisson Blu Mosi-oa-Tunya Resort officially launched its Sunday Sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi River.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba said the initiative reflects Government’s commitment to expanding tourism offerings beyond traditional activities and unlocking the full economic potential of Livingstone.
Mr Sikumba noted that for many years, tourism activities on the Zambezi River have largely been limited to sunset cruises, leaving boats docked for long hours during the day and resulting in lost revenue opportunities.
He likened the situation to the aviation industry, where grounded aircraft translate into financial losses, and said Government wants to see tourism assets fully utilised throughout the day and night.
“Through the Zambia Tourism Agency, we want to market Livingstone as a destination that offers a full-day river experience, including brunch, lunch, sunset and dinner cruises,” Mr Sikumba said.
The Minister encouraged boat operators and investors to increase activity on the river, assuring them that Government is ready to provide the necessary licences and policy support.
He added that efforts are underway to address challenges related to manpower and operating hours to ensure the Zambezi River is fully monetised on a 24-hour basis.
Mr Sikumba said the introduction of later flights into Lusaka was a short-term measure to allow tourists to enjoy more activities, but stressed that long-term success would depend on close collaboration between Government, boat operators and hospitality players.
He commended Radisson Blu Mosi-oa-Tunya Resort for leading the way and expressed hope that more operators would follow suit to help position Livingstone as a vibrant, round-the-clock tourism destination.
