Zambia and China Explore Trilateral Cooperation with Angola on Strategic Infrastructure

Zambia and China have engaged in discussions with a view to enhancing trilateral cooperation with Angola, focusing on strategic infrastructure, energy, transport, and agriculture.

H.E. Rev. Dr. Elias Munshya, Zambian Ambassador to Angola, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ambassador Zhang Bin, Chinese Ambassador to Angola, in a meeting described as cordial and constructive.

The discussions centred on potential investments and opportunities for collaboration between the three countries.

Ambassador Munshya highlighted priorities under Zambia’s New Dawn Administration, including the development of strategic transport corridors connecting Zambia to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Particular emphasis was placed on the Lobito Corridor, considered a legacy project requiring coordinated development across Zambia, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to strengthen regional trade and integration.

The Zambian envoy also outlined ongoing and planned road infrastructure upgrades, including routes from Livingstone and Chitundu to Kasumbalesa, and from Chingola to Jimbe, aimed at opening and reinforcing regional trade links.

He expressed appreciation for China’s continued support in Zambia’s infrastructure development.

On agriculture, Ambassador Munshya noted Zambia’s strong performance in 2025, achieving a near four million metric tonne maize harvest, with around 500,000 metric tonnes earmarked for export.

He highlighted Zambia’s high-quality seed production, which could support Chinese agricultural ventures operating in Angola.

Ambassador Zhang Bin shared insights into China’s ongoing investments in Angola’s energy sector and expressed interest in potential collaboration on an electricity interconnector between Angola and Zambia, which would bolster regional energy security and interconnectivity.

The meeting concluded with Ambassador Zhang welcoming Ambassador Munshya to the Luanda diplomatic corps and extending best wishes for his tour of duty. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between their diplomatic missions.
