Zambian Breweries and ZRST Promote Road Safety for Lusaka Residents
Zambian Breweries, in partnership with the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) and supported by the AB InBev Foundation, has rolled out a series of road-safety interventions targeting high-risk traffic hotspots in Lusaka.
The Lusaka on Foot and Wheels (LoFW) project aims to curb the rising number of pedestrian and motorcycle-related accidents in the city.
Data from ZRST shows that pedestrian casualties account for nearly 40% of road fatalities in Lusaka, while motorcycle accidents have surged due to the growth of the delivery and courier sectors. Contributing factors include high speeds, limited road-use training, and a lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
Speaking at the launch, Zambian Breweries Director of Legal & Corporate Affairs, Tawanda Hojane, emphasised the company’s commitment to community safety.
“Through the LoFW project, we are addressing the real risks faced daily by pedestrians and motorcycle riders. Safer roads mean our employees return home to their families, our distribution networks operate more reliably, and our retail partners can serve customers in secure environments,” he said.
ZRST Director and road-safety expert, Daniel Mwamba, highlighted the importance of data-driven interventions.
“Pedestrians, schoolchildren, and motorcycle riders remain the most at-risk road users in Lusaka. This partnership has allowed us to identify the most dangerous hotspots and implement engineering solutions that reduce speed, improve crossings, and ultimately save lives,” he said, noting that early results show traffic slowing to safer levels.
The project was implemented in collaboration with Lusaka City Council (LCC) and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), ensuring interventions address the city’s most pressing safety concerns.
Aaron Kamuti, board member of Commuters Rights Association of Zambia and RTSA, welcomed the initiative, noting the urgent need for such measures near schools, bus stations, and pedestrian crossings.
Zambian Breweries and ZRST describe LoFW as a model partnership translating evidence into action. With Lusaka’s rapid urban growth and increasing motorcycle use, both organisations stress that continued investment in road safety is crucial for Zambia’s social and economic resilience.
The partners plan to expand monitoring to additional high-risk areas in 2026 and continue community engagement and awareness campaigns.
