Public–Private Tourism Drive to Expand Jobs for Zambians

Minister of Tourism Hon. Rodney Sikumba has called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, describing public–private partnerships as essential to unlocking sustainable growth in Zambia’s tourism industry.

Speaking during the 20th anniversary celebrations of Sandy’s Creations Resort and Retail in Chilanga, the Minister said private enterprises play a critical role in job creation, economic diversification and community development, complementing government efforts to expand the tourism sector.

Hon. Sikumba noted that businesses such as Sandy’s Creations invest in quality tourism products, strengthen local supply chains and create sustainable employment opportunities for Zambians.

“The private sector is an indispensable partner in national development. It creates jobs, drives innovation and translates policy into tangible economic benefits for our people,” he said.

The Minister observed that over the past two decades, Sandy’s Creations has evolved from a small garden centre into a fully integrated tourism destination. He said the company now employs up to 150 people directly, while supporting numerous artisans, contractors and suppliers, demonstrating how private investment can stimulate local economies and enhance Zambia’s tourism offering.

He added that Sandy’s Creations aligns closely with government priorities on sustainable tourism, renewable energy and the promotion of domestic tourism. According to Hon. Sikumba, the development has contributed to positioning the Lusaka–Chilanga corridor as an emerging tourism hub.

The Minister congratulated Sandy’s Creations on reaching its 20-year milestone and commended the company for its commitment to staff training and development, as well as its contribution to beautifying homes and communities across the country through its flowers and landscaping services.

Meanwhile, Sandy’s Creations Chairperson and Co-Founder, Mr Chris Findlay, reflected on the company’s journey, recalling its humble beginnings as a small flower centre before growing into one of Lusaka’s most admired tourism destinations.

In an emotional address, Mr Findlay appealed to his children to one day carry forward the legacy of Sandy’s Creations with the same passion, dignity and sense of purpose that has defined the company’s growth over the past 20 years.
