Minister Pushes Lusaka Telecom to Prioritise Workers
Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, has called on Lusaka Telecom Solutions to position itself as an employer of choice by fully complying with labour laws and prioritising decent work for its employees.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the company’s senior management, who sought to strengthen collaboration with Government on innovation and technology, Ms Tambatamba stressed that workers must be placed at the centre of corporate growth strategies.
She reminded the telecommunications firm that corporate social responsibility begins within an organisation, through fair treatment of employees, respect for labour rights and deliberate efforts to cultivate a skilled and future-ready workforce.
“Corporate social responsibility is not only about external outreach; it starts with how companies treat their employees. I therefore urge you to uphold decent working conditions and create opportunities for continuous upskilling. That is the foundation of becoming an employer of choice,” she stated.
Ms Tambatamba also highlighted President Hakainde Hichilema’s strong focus on digital transformation, noting that Government is advancing technology-driven reforms to modernise public services and stimulate economic growth.
She commended Lusaka Telecom Solutions for contributing to the expansion of national digital infrastructure, which she described as essential for reducing the digital divide and ensuring that rural and underserved communities access key socio-economic services.
“By expanding digital infrastructure, we are enabling citizens, particularly young people, to access information, education, employment and business opportunities,” she said.
While acknowledging the role of technology in job creation, the Minister emphasised that such jobs must be decent, productive and compliant with labour laws, including safe workplaces and access to social security.
She reaffirmed Government’s commitment to fostering a predictable and supportive business environment that allows companies to grow and generate decent employment.
National Productivity Development Director, Cyprian Mayamba, encouraged the firm to submit its skills gaps to the Ministry so the Skills Advisory Committee could coordinate with relevant stakeholders to ensure training programmes match labour market needs.
Lusaka Telecom Solutions Country Manager, Ahmed Hameed, expressed the company’s commitment to developing a highly capable workforce by prioritising practical, locally-based training programmes that equip employees with industry-relevant skills.
Sales Manager, Aya Hesham, further appealed to academic institutions to strengthen artificial intelligence and cyber security programmes, noting that such skills are increasingly scarce in the fast-evolving digital economy.
