Kiyona Energy and Zambia Army Partner to Scale Up National Solar Projects

Zambia’s ambitions to add 1,000 MW of solar power to its energy mix have gained momentum following the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kiyona Energy Limited and the Zambia Army.

Under the agreement, the Army has allocated land for the development of three major solar projects: a 30MW Solar PV plant, a 4MW Solar PV system dedicated to water pumping, and a 5MW plant under the Green Cities Initiative. The partnership is expected to ease the country’s electricity deficit while strengthening energy security.

Speaking during the MoU signing at Army Headquarters in Lusaka on Wednesday, 3 December 2025, Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele reaffirmed the defence forces’ commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and security.

He emphasised that reliable and sustainable electricity is fundamental to the country’s operational readiness.

“We are availing 30 hectares at L85 for the development of a 30MW Solar PV plant. We are also supporting a 4MW Solar PV project for water pumping and internal residential supply, while an additional 7.5 hectares in Kaoma has been allocated for a 5MW plant under the Green Cities Initiative,” he said.

He added that the Army is prepared to open similar opportunities across all cantonments to support renewable energy growth.

ZESCO Managing Director, Eng. Justin Loongo, described the MoU as a strategic alignment of national priorities, highlighting its significance for energy security, climate resilience and the modernisation of key government facilities.

“Through this partnership, the Army will benefit from reliable green energy solutions that reduce dependence on the national grid at critical facilities while improving energy planning for mission-critical operations,” he said.

Eng. Loongo also commended the Army’s forward-looking approach in adopting sustainable energy systems, noting that it positions the defence forces as leaders in advancing national climate goals.

He further praised Kiyona Energy for presenting a well-structured investment and operational model for renewable energy development that is in line with Zambia’s long-term energy transition agenda.
