China and Zambia Strengthen Friendship
Premier Li Qiang, China’s second-highest official, today described China as a “good brother, partner and friend” of Zambia, highlighting the desire to strengthen political trust and deepen the countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership.
Premier Li held bilateral talks with President Hakainde Hichilema at State House, conveying warm regards and best wishes from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
He highlighted Zambia’s economic reforms and growth under President Hichilema’s leadership, and reaffirmed China’s support for Zambia’s core interests and development priorities.
President Hichilema expressed gratitude for the enduring Zambia–China relationship, which has been maintained since Zambia’s independence in 1964.
He praised China’s role in constructing the Tanzania–Zambia Railway (TAZARA) in the 1970s, describing it as a landmark of bilateral cooperation that opened Zambia’s trade to the Indian Ocean.
“The Chinese people took a decision to support their brothers and sisters in Zambia in constructing the rail line,” President Hichilema said, emphasising that the railway remains a symbol of solidarity and friendship between the two nations.
He reiterated Zambia’s commitment to the One China policy and stressed the importance of continuing the progressive path of cooperation set by Chairman Mao Zedong and President Kenneth Kaunda.
“This is a friendship that must be further developed by us and by those who come after us,” the President added.
The visit highlights the strengthening of political, economic, and infrastructural ties, reinforcing China’s role as a key partner in Zambia’s long-term development agenda.
