Zambia Launches Revised National Quality Policy to Drive Industrial Competitiveness
Zambia has launched the revised National Quality Policy (NQP) and its Implementation Plan, marking a decisive step toward strengthening industrial performance, boosting consumer protection, and improving the country’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.
Speaking during the launch, Acting Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Elias Mubanga, MP, said the 2025 National Quality Policy replaces the 2011 version to better align Zambia’s quality infrastructure with current economic realities and national development priorities.
“The 2025 National Quality Policy builds upon previous achievements while addressing critical gaps that have limited our industrial and trade potential,” Hon. Mubanga said.
The revised policy aims to ensure that all goods and services produced or traded in Zambia meet the standards required by consumers, regulators, and international markets. It also introduces measures to curb the entry of substandard imports, safeguard public safety, and promote fair competition among businesses.
Hon. Mubanga emphasised that smooth implementation of the policy will require strong collaboration between government, private sector players, business associations, and development partners.
“Government alone cannot actualise the measures contained in this policy. We must work together to build a national culture that prioritises quality as a driver of economic growth, industrialisation, and export expansion,” he said.
He further commended the Zambia Bureau of Standards, the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency, the Zambia Metrology Agency, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the policy’s development.
The 2025–2035 National Quality Policy is expected to play a central role in Zambia’s industrial transformation agenda, supporting local manufacturing, enhancing export readiness, and positioning the country to effectively participate in regional and global value chains.
