Dr Kenneth Kaunda Honoured by Angola for Lifelong Support of Liberation Struggle
The Government of the Republic of Angola has conferred the Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence upon Zambia’s Founding President, the late Dr Kenneth David Kaunda, in recognition of his remarkable contribution to Angola’s liberation struggle.
The prestigious medal, awarded in the Honour Class, was presented by His Excellency President João Lourenço during a special ceremony in Luanda, ahead of Angola’s Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations to be officially marked on 11 November 2025.
Dr Kaunda was honoured for his steadfast support during Angola’s fight for independence and for his wider role in advancing the liberation of southern Africa. Representing the Kaunda family at the event, Ms Musata Kaunda received the award on behalf of the late statesman.
The Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence is bestowed in three categories: Honour Class, Independence Class and Peace and Development Class. It recognises individuals and institutions whose courage, commitment and service have shaped Angola’s history, peace and progress.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Angola, His Excellency Rev Dr Elias Munshya, described the recognition as a moment of profound pride for the Zambian people. He added that it reaffirms Dr Kaunda’s enduring legacy as a Pan-African icon, a defender of human dignity and a trusted ally in the continent’s liberation efforts.
He noted that the honour further strengthens the strong diplomatic and historical bonds shared between Zambia and Angola, founded on principles of freedom, solidarity and mutual respect.
