Zambia and Qatar Agree to Deepen Economic and Diplomatic Partnership
Zambia and the State of Qatar have pledged to strengthen their bilateral relations, focusing on trade, investment, tourism, and climate-resilient development, following meetings on the margins of the United Nations Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) in Doha.
Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held discussions with His Excellency Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, on enhancing collaboration in key sectors.
Hon. Haimbe highlighted Zambia’s investment-friendly environment, underpinned by peace, stability, and a favourable taxation framework, while inviting Qatar to explore business opportunities in the country.
“The tourism sector offers significant potential for cultural and people-to-people exchanges between our two nations,” Hon. Haimbe noted. He also commended Qatar’s leadership in promoting global peace and security and reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to working together on shared international development goals.
His Excellency Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi welcomed the initiative, expressing Qatar’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with African countries, including Zambia, and emphasised the importance of establishing clear frameworks for government-to-government engagement to boost trade and investment.
Hon. Haimbe later met with Her Excellency Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, Minister of State for International Cooperation of Qatar, to discuss potential partnerships in Zambia’s energy sector. The discussions focused on advancing green energy projects, diversifying Zambia’s energy mix, and promoting climate resilience through smart agriculture and water-harvesting initiatives.
Her Excellency Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad assured that relevant stakeholders in the energy and finance sectors would be engaged, and proposed convening a technical meeting with Zambian institutions to explore concrete collaboration.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating business linkages between Zambia and international partners for the benefit of the Zambian people.
