Osaka Showcases Carbon-Neutral Tech at EXPO 2025

Osaka Prefecture has reaffirmed its ambition to become a carbon-neutral, technologically advanced city, after showcasing a range of innovative environmental solutions during a demonstration event held from 7 to 13 October as part of EXPO 2025, OSAKA, KANSAI, JAPAN.

The exhibition featured ten pioneering technologies in renewable energy, CO₂ capture, hydrogen use, recycling, and smart energy management, all developed through the Prefecture’s Carbon Neutral Technology Development and Demonstration Project.

The week-long showcase drew local and international audiences, highlighting the practicality and commercial readiness of Osaka-born green technologies. Officials say the innovations demonstrate how industry, academia, and government collaboration can accelerate the transition to a climate-friendly economy while supporting sustainable industrial growth.

Launched in FY2022, the Carbon Neutral Technology Development and Demonstration Project supports businesses and research institutions working to develop and commercialise carbon-neutral solutions. Eighteen projects have been selected to date, with Osaka Prefecture allocating a total of 1.76 billion yen in subsidies. Several of the supported technologies have already progressed into commercial deployment.

Exhibiting companies represented a diverse range of technical fields. Kansai Catalyst, Bigvan and Renaissance Energy Research presented renewable and biomass energy systems, while Sumitomo Electric Industries and MUIC Kansai showcased advanced CO₂ capture solutions. In the energy management space, Smert Design, TIGER Corporation and MIRAKOTO revealed high-efficiency thermal and air-conditioning technologies, including AI-powered systems.

Hydrogen technologies were a strong feature, with companies such as Green Methanation Research, SHINGU ENERGY and T N Plan presenting production, refuelling and hydrogen-powered mobility solutions. Meanwhile, firms including Koushi Chemical Industry and Microwave Chemical demonstrated next-generation recycling and microwave-based industrial processes.

A wide range of applications was displayed, including fuel-cell ships, hydrogen refuelling systems, vacuum insulation panels, recycled products made from waste plastics and seashells, and carbon capture devices designed for industrial and commercial use.

Osaka Prefecture says the next phase of its strategy is to convert the technologies demonstrated at the Expo into growing industries that support a carbon-neutral urban economy. Officials emphasised that these innovations will form part of the Expo legacy, positioning Osaka as a global hub for green technologies. The Prefecture also plans to strengthen international collaboration, inviting overseas companies and investors to work alongside local firms to accelerate commercial deployment.

With Japan committed to net-zero emissions by 2050, Osaka believes that home-grown technologies — paired with international cooperation, will be essential in building a sustainable, competitive and environmentally resilient future.
