SADC Chair Calls for Peaceful and Credible Elections in Tanzania
SADC Chairperson and President of Malawi Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has called for peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in the United Republic of Tanzania as the country heads to the polls on 29 October 2025.
In a statement issued on the eve of Tanzania’s Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections, President Mutharika reaffirmed the Southern African Development Community’s support for the electoral process, describing democratic elections as a cornerstone of stability and good governance in the region.
At the invitation of the Tanzanian government, SADC has deployed an Electoral Observation Mission led by former Speaker of Malawi’s Parliament, The Right Honourable Richard Msowoya. The team will monitor the pre-election period, polling day, and post-election processes in line with the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections adopted in 2021. These guidelines promote free, fair, peaceful, and credible elections across all Member States.
President Mutharika praised Tanzania’s long-standing record of peace and stability, expressing confidence that the country would maintain its reputation throughout and after the polls. He noted that SADC’s presence reinforces a commitment to a transparent and inclusive electoral process.
He urged eligible Tanzanians to turn out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right and contribute to national development. He further appealed to political leaders and supporters to respect the will of the people and follow legal channels should disputes arise.
“May these elections strengthen democracy, foster national unity and chart the path for prosperity in the United Republic of Tanzania,” he concluded.
