Proteas Women Eye Historic World Cup Glory, Says CSA Director Nkwe
Cricket South Africa (CSA) Director of Cricket, Enoch Nkwe, has praised the Proteas Women for their resilience and growth as they prepare to face England in the World Cup semi-final.
Nkwe expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome past disappointments and secure the ultimate prize. “Reaching the semi-finals is a reflection of the hard work, resilience, and belief within the team. They’ve shown great character throughout the tournament and continue to inspire many young players back home,” he said.
The Proteas Women suffered a heavy defeat against England in their opening match, bowled out for just 69 runs. Nkwe said the loss has only strengthened the team’s resolve. “The opening match was a tough lesson, but also a valuable one. The team has grown tremendously since then and would be eager to show how much they’ve progressed. There is definitely motivation to put in a strong performance against England.”
South Africa have endured heartbreak at major tournaments in recent years, exiting the 2017 and 2022 World Cups early and finishing runners-up in the ICC T20 World Cups of 2023 and 2024. This semi-final represents a chance to finally turn promise into glory.
“There is strong belief within CSA that this team can go all the way. The progress over the years has been remarkable and we’ve seen consistent improvement in both individual and team performances. The players and management have built a strong culture and we have full faith in their ability to finish the job,” Nkwe added.
Off the field, player safety has been a concern following allegations against a local individual in Indore, India. South African all-rounder Sune Luus confirmed the Proteas are prioritising security: “I will not comment on the matter. We know where to go and what we can’t do [in India]. We do have a security team with us.”
With determination high and support from CSA, the Proteas Women head into the semi-final confident that this could be their moment to claim South Africa’s first Women’s Cricket World Cup title.
