Malawi Becomes Global Pioneer in AI-Driven Climate Governance
Malawi has taken a historic step in climate action, unveiling the world’s first AI-driven platform for implementing the Paris Agreement. The initiative, launched in partnership with the Green Economy Partnership (GEP), integrates a National Inventory and a National Carbon Registry System on a secure blockchain architecture, positioning Malawi as a global leader in digital climate governance.
The Paris Agreement Implementation Platform (PAIP) will streamline the management of emissions data, carbon project registration, and international reporting, offering transparency, accuracy, and enhanced opportunities for climate finance. Unlike other systems, Malawi’s platform covers all compliance elements, including ISO, ESG, and Paris Agreement requirements, ensuring full traceability and integrity of data.
Dr Yusuf Malsellino Mkungula, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, said: “This AI-driven system places Malawi at the forefront of climate innovation. It will enable us to manage Internationally Transferable Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) efficiently, mobilise climate finance, and link environmental integrity with economic opportunity.”
Ivano Iannelli, Chief Sustainability Officer at GEP, highlighted the transformative potential of the platform: “Artificial intelligence and digital governance allow governments to harness emission data in unprecedented ways. PAIP automates emission management and reporting, while protecting data sovereignty through secure digital embassies.”
GEP’s CEO, Arthur Chirinikian, added: “Malawi’s adoption of this platform sets a global precedent. It accelerates climate finance access, enables real-time reporting, and serves as a blueprint for Africa’s leadership in climate-tech integration.”
The official launch of Malawi’s PAIP is scheduled for COP30, showcasing one of the most advanced climate governance systems globally. Following this landmark adoption, GEP is inviting other nations, particularly in the Global South, to join the initiative, offering customised AI tools to achieve climate compliance at no cost.
