Zambia and Mozambique Strengthen Bilateral Ties Ahead of Presidential Visit
Ms Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, today officially opened the Senior Officials Meeting between the Republic of Zambia and the Republic of Mozambique.
The session marks a key preparatory step ahead of the Ministerial Meeting scheduled for 22nd October 2025 and the forthcoming Working Visit of His Excellency Mr Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique.
The Mozambican delegation was led by Mr Hermenegildo José Caetano, Director for Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
In her opening remarks, Ms Gundersen emphasised the significance of the meeting, noting that it provides a platform to review progress in implementing various cooperation frameworks, particularly those emanating from the recent State Visit and the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation (JPCC) between the two nations.
She underscored the importance of assessing the status of existing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements, calling for the finalisation of those still pending. Ms Gundersen reaffirmed Zambia’s steadfast commitment to deepening relations with Mozambique, stressing that both nations continue to work closely on matters of shared interest.
Mr Caetano, in his remarks, described the meeting as a crucial step in evaluating the implementation of decisions made during the last JPCC session in 2023. He added that President Chapo’s upcoming visit will serve as a cornerstone for the next JPCC in 2026, paving the way for enhanced collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, transport, and other areas of mutual benefit.
The Senior Officials Meeting precedes the Ministerial Session, to be co-chaired by the Foreign Ministers of Zambia and Mozambique, ahead of President Chapo’s official working visit later this week.
