Zambia Honoured with Global FAO Award for Agricultural Excellence
Zambia has received the FAO Global Technical Recognition Award for its outstanding achievements in sustainable plant production and protection, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s agricultural journey.
The award was presented to the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) during the 80th Anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the 2025 World Food Forum held in Rome last night.
This recognition places Zambia among the world’s leading nations in agricultural innovation, research, and sustainability. ZARI earned the honour for its exceptional efforts in managing Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD), a viral disease that causes root rot and reduces yields, first reported in Zambia in 2018.
Beyond disease management, ZARI has played a pivotal role in advancing plant genetic resource preservation, developing improved crop varieties, and promoting climate-smart agricultural practices that have enhanced food security and improved smallholder farmers’ livelihoods.
Speaking after receiving the award on behalf of the Zambian Government, Mr Oscar Chita, Assistant Director – Planning at the Ministry of Agriculture, said the accolade reflects Zambia’s growing global reputation for agricultural excellence.
“This award demonstrates our government’s commitment to prioritising agriculture as a cornerstone of national transformation through research, innovation, and inclusive development,” Mr Chita said.
He added that ZARI’s work in safeguarding over 6,500 plant genetic collections through the National Plant Genetic Resource Centre has been instrumental in preserving agricultural biodiversity and strengthening the nation’s food systems.
ZARI’s advancements in plant health management, pest control, and the development of resilient crop varieties have significantly boosted farm productivity, income levels, and climate resilience among farming communities.
The FAO Global Technical Recognition Awards celebrate institutions that have shown exceptional innovation and leadership in sustainable plant production and protection over the past four decades.
Zambia’s recognition underscores its emergence as a model for sustainable agricultural transformation in Africa and beyond.
