Zambia Welcomes First Female UN Tourism Secretary-General (Elect) for Landmark Visit

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the arrival of the Secretary-General (Elect) of the United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism), Ms Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais, who has made history as the first woman to hold the prestigious position within the organisation.

Ms Al Nowais arrived in Zambia today, Tuesday, 14 October 2025, for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between Zambia and UN Tourism. The visit focuses on advancing sustainable tourism development, promoting investment, and enhancing regional collaboration in line with Zambia’s Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP) and the Tourism Master Plan (2022–2038).

During her visit, Ms Al Nowais is expected to pay courtesy calls on His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, and other senior government officials, including the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Mr Rodney Sikumba, MP.

As part of her itinerary, Ms Al Nowais will travel to Livingstone to experience some of Zambia’s most iconic attractions. Her programme will include a sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi River, hosted by the Radisson Blu Resort, and visits to Mukuni Big 5, the Victoria Falls, and the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

The Ministry of Tourism described the visit as a historic milestone in Zambia’s partnership with UN Tourism. It reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to promoting sustainable, inclusive, and transformative tourism development.

Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Mr Evans Muhanga, welcomed Ms Al Nowais and her delegation, expressing confidence that the visit would further deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen Zambia’s position as a leading tourism destination in the region.
